Digestate Treatment: Into the future with biogas
Solenoid metering pumps, as well as other equipment, is used in the treatment of digestate in the largest biogas plant in Switzerland. Switzerland is into biogas in a big way and the largest biogas plant in Switzerland was connected to the grid in the Lucerne district of Inwil in 2009. When operating at full capacity, it supplies up to 1.9 million cubic metres of gas per year - for use by natural gas vehicles (NGV). The volume produced is sufficient for 2,000 cars each travelling 12,000 kilometres per year.

Lower costs with digestate treatmentInside the biogas plant, or more precisely inside the digestate treatment plant: system technology from ProMinent. This also ensures that overflow water can be drained from the fermentation process into the sewage treatment plant. The majority of the water is treated and reused as industrial process water and washing water, thereby saving costs.
The digestate treatment plant itself is manufactured by Gelsenkirchen-based A3. "We have been working on this with ProMinent for five years," explains Marco Conen, Head of Project Development at A3. "Our products and ProMinent technology work well together."
Robust in all processes: Solenoid metering pumps
The first step in digestate treatment is the separation of solids and liquids. "The flocculent comes from a ProMinent polymer preparation station," explains Mr. Conen. Some of the solid parts are used as fertilizer and the liquid flows back into ultra-filtration, where the smallest particles are drawn out of the water so that they do not coat the diaphragm in the subsequent reverse osmosis process.
Prior to reverse osmosis, gamma/L diaphragm metering pumps meter in anti-scalant.
"Diaphragm metering pumps, that is solenoid metering pumps, are extremely simple to operate and have a long service life," comments Friedhelm Klüners, Regional Manager (North) with ProMinent, "This is why they are popular with customers." ProMinent® Vario C diaphragm metering pumps then meter 78% sulphuric acid into the water reducing the pH prior to reverse osmosis.
