Seawater Desalination for two Chinese Islands
For some time now, reverse osmosis has been considered worldwide the best cost/performance ratio amongst membrane filtration technologies when it comes to converting seawater to potable water by means of desalination, especially when no other natural water resources are available. In the following case, due to the lack of other water resources, ProMinent planned, installed and successfully placed into operation a complete water treatment solution to convert seawater to potable water for the inhabitants of the Chinese islands, Zhangzhi and Dachangshan.
Many small and medium sized islands are located close to the coast of Northeast-China. Most of them are populated. However, there is, more or less, always a lack of potable water because the required natural resources are rare and the amount of rain decreases every year. To solve this problem of potable water lack on two islands, ProMinent installed complete water treatment solutions on two islands of them. They are based on the desalination of seawater by means of reverse osmosis.
While on the island Dachangshan, a building to house the water treatment solution was available, there was none on the island Zhangzhi which meant that ProMinent had to design and realize a containerised solution in that case.
The principle potable water treatment process design is:
- open seawater intake
- disinfection
- flocculation
- multimedia filtration
- chemical conditioning
- desalination by reverse osmosis
- pH value adjustment
- disinfection of the final potable water
At the end of this treatment process, ProMinent supplies high quality potable water complying with WHO standards. At Dachangshan, 1.500 m³ per day of potable water for approx. 89.000 inhabitants are now produced, on Zhanzhi 1.200 m³ per day for approx. 70.000 inhabitants are now produced.
